Underdogs Film Festival: Submission Deadline Approaching!

August 12-14th
Fourth Floor Artists
Collective at Francisco Studios (EADO)
Francisco Studios
300 McKinney St.
Houston, TX

Huntsville’s very own film distribution company, Underdogs.com (also associated with Gothic Films), is busy again with planning a brand new film festival! Last year, they organized The City of Death Film Festival and this year they have already held the 2011 Aphrodite Cinfest International Film Festival. Now, they are moving BEYOND Huntsville and are busy organizing a film festival in Houston, TX! We are very excited about this film festival and definitely plan on being there!
According to their website, the Underdogs Film Festival has two purposes: "First, the festival is intended to introduce audiences to quality independent films from talented filmmakers that don't have the marketing advantages of big Hollywood studios. Second, the festival is an opportunity for UnderDogs.com to discover films that are ready for commercial release, but lack a means of distribution to wide audiences."
If you are a filmmaker in Huntsville (or really anywhere—they have had submissions from all over the country), then this film festival is a great opportunity for you to showcase your movie or short film! However, it would probably already have to be a completed project, because the deadline for getting submissions in is FAST approaching! It’s only a few days away on July 15th!
If you are a fan of film, and especially independent film, then this is a great opportunity to mingle with filmmakers, meet interesting people, and see some very promising films!

I wanted to write much more and sooner about this event, but personal family matters have kept me away from the computer most of this week.

What is a “Slutwalk”? It is a worldwide response to a comment from a Toronto police officer who said, "Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized."
Walks like the one being held in Houston tomorrow have been organized all over the nation and around the world—they are an effort to make people aware of the problem and effects of blaming the victim for being raped and/or sexually assaulted. Many articles and debates have sprung up as a result to these events as well as an argument over the name “slutwalk”  and whether or not the name is more helpful or harmful to the cause. There has also been a great controversy over having one of these walks in India. There has even been a controvery over this Houston event after the official Facebook event page was temporarily removed by Facebook after it was reported too many times as being "offensive."
We will be attending this event tomorrow, and will be writing a more indepth follow-up anaylsis with pictures included.
Click HERE to see the official website and HERE to see an event page for those making travel arrangements to this event from the Huntsville and Conroe area. There is also a Slutwalk Houston Facebook Page.

Edit: We drove down, ran a little late, and didn't see that many cars at the park so we left. Therefore, we can't do much of a follow-up entry. =/
