Midway Volunteer Fire Dept.'s 6th Annual BBQ Cook-Off & Fall Fest (Oct. 28-29)

The Midway Volunteer Fire Department will host its 6th annual IBCA championship BBQ Cook-Off and Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, on the grounds of the Midway Community Center. The cook-off will feature cooks from the Walker County region and around the state. We did some digging around on the IBCA website and found out that this event is the Texas state championship, and there is $5,000 in guaranteed prize money. If there are 50 teams, that amount jumps up to $10,000. We aren't sure how many teams there are, but you can contact Sherry or Linda at the numbers at the end of this article for more information.
The event starts at 7 pm Friday and resumes early Saturday morning with the gates opening at 9am. There will be vendors selling jewelry, arts and crafts, purses, koozies, woodwork, etc.

Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for ages 5 and under. Admission includes a bbq plate lunch with brisket and all the trimmings, entrance to the cook-off and vendors' booths, costume contest, live and silent auctions, and awards presentation.

For more information on this event, you can call Sherry at (936)348-7378 or Linda at (936) 349-1991.

Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival (Oct. 14-16)

This weekend is the annual Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival, which benefits the non-profit group The Friends of Conroe, Inc. The festival is held in downtown Conroe. If you can't find anywhere to park, or if you don't feel like trying, you can catch a shuttle in the parking lot of Target. Click here to view a map.
There is plenty to do at the festival: eat, shop, listen to live music, eat some more, browse the various arts and crafts booths, etc. There is also a kids' area with rides, a petting zoo, pony rides, a "monster mural," and a stage for local dance teams to perform.

There are a lot of food vendors at this festival. You will see the typical festival items like corn dogs, lemonade,  turkey legs, kettle corn, etc., but there will also be Cajun items like pistolettes, crawfish etoufee, gumbo, red beans and rice, cajun catfish, and even alligator on a stick. To see a complete list of this year's vendors, click here.

The live music at the festival includes country, zydeco, blues, and more. To view a complete list of this year's musical guests, click here.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online. If you purchase a one-day pass at the gate, it will cost $12. If you purchase online, it is $9, but there is a $1.49 fee. You can also purchase a 3-day pass online for $18 (plus 1.98 fee), which is a good deal if you plan on attending all three days. To buy tickets online, click here.

From October 15, 2011 until April 15, 2012, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts will feature the exhibit, "Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs."

This exhibit features "more than 100 artworks, most of which had never been shown in the United States prior to this tour. These spectacular treasures—more than half of which come from the tomb of King Tutankhamun—include the golden sandals found on the boy king´s mummy; a gold coffinette that held his stomach; golden statues of the gods; and King Tut's rings, ear ornaments, and gold collar. Also showcased are objects associated with the most important rulers of the 30 dynasties that reigned in Egypt over a 2,000-year span....Among the highlights is the largest likeness of King Tut ever discovered: a 10-foot statue of the pharaoh found at the remains of a funerary temple." -(Visit the Museum of Fine Arts Website for more information)

On November 4th, the SHSU Alumni Association is sponsoring a trip to Houston to view the exhibit.
