If you already have plans for the weekend of May 27^th -29^th, then cancel them—unless you were already planning to attend Comicpalooza!

According to their website, Comicpalooza's purpose “is to provide the best and biggest annual multi-format pop culture convention in the southwest region of the United States, serving not only the fans of comics, science fiction, fantasy, video and table top gaming, anime, music and film, but also as a trade show and showcase for the studios, publishers, and manufacturers in those industries.”

Founded in 2008 as a small event at The Alamo Drafthouse, Comicpalooza has quickly grown into an incredibly huge annual event! Comicpalooza 2011 will not only feature Battlestar Galactica Admiral, EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (my favorite role of his is still Gaff in Bladerunner)—but it will also include other celebrity guests such as the following: Marina Sirtis (Deana Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation and voice actor for Demona from Gargoyles), Tony Todd (CANDY MAN), Sean Maher (Simon from the painfully too short Joss Whedon series, Firefly), Peter Mahew (Chewbacca), and several more! Also in attendance, will be one of my all-time favorite comic book writers (quickly becoming my number one favorite the more I read Strangers in Paradise), Terry Moore. He is probably best known for his long running series Strangers in Paradise—which features a love triangle between Francine, Katchoo, and David that is made further complicated as more characters are introduced to the mix, plotlines involving the mob, and other thrilling storylines. Part soap opera, part kick-butt action, and ALWAYS absorbing… Strangers in Paradise is a must read for anyone with good taste! His most recent series, Echo, just finished and he is already working on his next project. I know I will be asking him more about THAT at Comicpalooza! Terry Moore will only be there on Saturday. Coincidentally, Comicpalooza has several ties to Huntsville. Andrew Williams, the man behind their video reviews, is also a SHSU graduate. SHSU’s Quidditch team will also be there!

Comicpalooza also features a film festival that is sponsored by Spatterfest. If you can’t tell by the name “Splatterfest,” this film festival will feature several horror films playing back to back throughout each day with the last one beginning at midnight on Friday and Saturday night. So, in between stalking Admiral Adama, and buying lots and lots of comic books, go check out a few horror films.

Huntsville’s own Gothic Films/Ethician Arts (a division of EVN, Inc owned by George Russell) will have their movie, Naked Horror, playing in the festival on Saturday night at midnight! Hopefully, they will have a booth set up all weekend. If they do, then you should stop and say hello to Naked Horror director Carlo Rodriguez, cinematographer Jason Henderson, and cameraman/editor/cat lover Luis Torres!
