The Midway Volunteer Fire Department will host its 6th annual IBCA championship BBQ Cook-Off and Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, on the grounds of the Midway Community Center. The cook-off will feature cooks from the Walker County region and around the state. We did some digging around on the IBCA website and found out that this event is the Texas state championship, and there is $5,000 in guaranteed prize money. If there are 50 teams, that amount jumps up to $10,000. We aren't sure how many teams there are, but you can contact Sherry or Linda at the numbers at the end of this article for more information.
The event starts at 7 pm Friday and resumes early Saturday morning with the gates opening at 9am. There will be vendors selling jewelry, arts and crafts, purses, koozies, woodwork, etc.
Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for ages 5 and under. Admission includes a bbq plate lunch with brisket and all the trimmings, entrance to the cook-off and vendors' booths, costume contest, live and silent auctions, and awards presentation.
For more information on this event, you can call Sherry at (936)348-7378 or Linda at (936) 349-1991.

Splatterfest: September 27th -October 1st
Splatterfest 2011
September 27th -October 1st
Get into the Halloween spirit early with Splatterfest! Splatterfest is a five day film festival that begins on Tuesday, September 27th and lasts throughout Saturday, October 1st. It is held at the West Oaks Alamo Draft House.
Tuesday and Wednesday are the nights of short films. Splatterfest held its 2nd annual short film competition a couple of weekends ago. Filmmakers were given 54 hours to write, film, edit, and turn in a short film. We are very excited about THIS part of Splatterfest... because we entered the competition! Hopefully, we will make Huntsville proud with our movie. That, or horrified. We will be happy with any sort of reaction besides bored. =)
On Thursday night, they will be showing the world premier of Cherry Bomb as well as the world premier of Humans vs. Zombies. Expect some of the filmakers/actors to be there.
Friday is Michael Beihn Night! Remember Kyle Reese? The man who was sent back in time by his own son to protect Sarah Connor and also get her pregnant--with the son who sent him back in time at the beginning of the film--before dying a very sad death? Michael Beihn, most recognized for his roles in Terminator, The Abyss, and Aliens (and obviously a James Cameron favorite), will be there that Friday to promote his two latest movies. The first film is The Victim, which is Michael Beihn's directoral debut. He also wrote and stars in the film. The second film is the world premier of Jacob, which also stars Michael Beihn.
Saturday, is probably the night that most horror fans are looking forward to attending. Bruce Campbell, most famous for his role as Ashley 'Ash' J. Williams from the Evil Dead movies, will be there signing autographs (for a price of course)! They will also be showing all three Evil Dead movies!
If you are interested in any or all of these nights, then get your tickets pronto! VIP and individual night tickets are still available, but they are also selling out fast. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Conroe Hastings
Tuesday, October 18th at 7pm
The "Other Half" of Hey, Huntsville, was once convinced for a good FIVE minutes that Stephen King was having a book signing at the Huntsville Hastings (Sucker). However, THIS celebrity book signing is no joke! It’s Facebook Official HERE.
On Tuesday, October 18th, hop on that crazy train and head down to the Conroe Hastings, because Ozzy Osbourne will be there for a book signing!
According to the description of the new book, Trust Me, I’m Dr. Ozzy, is “part humor, part memoir, and part bad advice” and “will include some of the best material from his published columns, answers to celebrities' medical questions, charts, sidebars, and more.”
Buy a copy after it comes out on October 11th, and get Dr. Osbourne to sign it at the Hastings Conroe a week later. Please leave your bats and doves at home.

Underdogs Film Festival: August 12 - August 14th
August 12-14th
Fourth Floor Artists
Collective at Francisco Studios (EADO)
Francisco Studios
300 McKinney St.
Houston, TX
We previously reported some of this information when we wrote about the Underdogs.com submission deadline to submit short films, music videos, and feature films for this movie festival. Now, it is almost time to WATCH those submissions! The Underdogs Film Festival is THIS weekend. Ticket information can be found HERE.
We will be there taking pictures, watching movies, meeting filmmakers, and eating cheese cubes. It's going to be a FUN weekend!
I've watched some of the movies that will be shown this weekend. My favorite, from what I have already seen, is Gary C. Warren's Best Laid Schemes. I'm a fan of raunchy comedies and overly complicated revenge schemes, and that is basically how I would describe the plot of this film. Very funny movie!
He and his lady love, Sharon wright, can also be seen starring in their online show, For Worse. Click HERE to watch it on YouTube! It feaures some very good acting, because I'm pretty sure they have more fondness for each other in real life than what you see in For Worse! Sharon Wright is also the star of the short film, Tell Me That You Love Me, which is also an official selection of the Underdogs Film Festival. I haven't seen that entry yet, but I am looking forward to it.
There are tons of other feature films and short films that can be seen in this festival, including several Twitchy Dolphin Flixs. Click HERE for the full list of entries!
Also, keep a lookout for THIS guy! He is the one mostly responsible for organizing this event:
(Carlo Rodriguez holding a fancy Action on Films Award)
Info from previous article:
Huntsville’s very own film distribution company, Underdogs.com (also associated with Gothic Films), is busy again with planning a brand new film festival! Last year, they organized The City of Death Film Festival and this year they have already held the 2011 Aphrodite Cinfest International Film Festival. Now, they are moving BEYOND Huntsville and are busy organizing a film festival in Houston, TX! We are very excited about this film festival and definitely plan on being there!
According to their website, the Underdogs Film Festival has two purposes: "First, the festival is intended to introduce audiences to quality independent films from talented filmmakers that don't have the marketing advantages of big Hollywood studios. Second, the festival is an opportunity for UnderDogs.com to discover films that are ready for commercial release, but lack a means of distribution to wide audiences."
If you are a fan of film, and especially independent film, then this is a great opportunity to mingle with filmmakers, meet interesting people, and see some very promising films!

Upcoming Rosenwall Shows: August 13th and August 14th
Local band Rosenwall is going to be a very busy this weekend! They have two upcoming shows on both Friday and Saturday!
Friday: This Friday, August 13th, Rosenwall will be performing at Porky’s in Willis, Texas. Click HERE to see their Facebook page.
Address: 10925 FM 1097 W Willis, TX 77378
Don’t confuse this Porky’s with the one in Cut-N-Shoot. We had the opportunity to visit THAT Porky’s bar last weekend for karaoke with TNT Entertainment, and we had a blast! Rest assured, we were neither “cut” nor “shot” at, although we probably would have deserved it with our awesomely awful dance moves. Also, bikers have the best pick-up lines (“Hey, your purple dress matches my bike. Wanna go check it out?”), and TNT Entertainment is a very entertaining karaoke group. If you ever find yourself traveling near Cut-N-Shoot on a Saturday night, then you should go check them out! The only thing that I didn’t like about the place was how smoky it is inside. You can see pictures of our trip to Porky’s in Cut-N-Shoot on our Hey, Huntsville Facebook page!
Saturday: On Saturday, August 14th, Rosenwall will be performing in Conroe at Papa’s on the Lake. Click HERE to see their website.
Papa’s features live music on what looks like a weekly basis according to their website schedule, and they also feature food, pool tables, video games, volleyball, and indoor and outdoor deck seating. I’ve never been there so I can’t confirm that this place is as cool as it sounds, but if you are a Rosenwall fan, this Saturday might be a good time to check it out! You can take your car, hog, or boat! I’m not sure when Rosenwall will be going on, because I think there is more than one band performing that night since Right to Refuse is the band listed on the website, but live music starts at 8pm and lasts until midnight.

El Roy Icehouse (Trinity, TX)
I recently discovered a rad little ice house close enough to Huntsville to drive to without whining about who's paying for the gas but far out enough for you to think you've traveled far, far away. El Roy Icehouse is located at the old Bell's Camp Marina. For those of you familiar with the old Bell's Camp... well... forget what you know or have heard. There's a new sheriff in town.
El Roy Icehouse, in a roundabout way named after the dude that, way back when, started it all, has a new proprietor: Matt. I traveled to El Roy a couple days ago to find that Matt was not the sort of person you would think you'd find in the middle of nowhere in rural Texas. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and one rad dude. I enjoyed talking with him about all sorts of things I do and things I probably don't remember talking about. He has also done a lot of work to the building itself, including adding some eclectic decor, and he is doing a damn fine job.
There is surprisingly a lot of space inside the bar. It has two main rooms, some very clean restrooms, and an outside deck. There is plenty to do around here as well: games, pool tables, a jukebox, and a friendly kitty that hangs around. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try a spicy pickled egg. I was also impressed by the wheelbarrow full of peanuts.
El Roy Icehouse is located at 266 Bell's Camp Rd., Trinity, TX 75862. If you get lost and need directions, their phone number is (936)594-0342. You can also view their Facebook page (to keep up with events, like live music, pot luck dinners, etc...) by clicking here.
To see more photos of El Roy Icehouse and keep up with events and info for Hville and the surrounding areas, be sure to add us (Hey, Huntsville!) on Facebook as well by clicking here: Click me!

Review: Pizza Shack (Willis, TX)
If you ever find yourself traveling from Huntsville to Houston or anywhere in-between, you should seriously consider stopping in Willis to check out Pizza Shack. It is located at 115 W Montgomery St. You just take the Willis exit, take a left over the interstate, and keep going until right before you reach Hwy 75. Pizza Shack will be on your right.
Both times I have been to Pizza Shack, I have ordered things other than pizza. I have heard great things about the pizza, but the last time I went, I couldn't resist ordering the blackened chicken penne. Most of the dishes come with a small salad, and of course, you get bread sticks.
This had 4 sticks, but my friend ate one before I could get a photo. |
The prices were a little steep (my blackened chicken was about $14 & my friend's chicken alfredo was about $11), but if you arrive before 3p, you can order from the lunch menu, which is significantly cheaper - almost half the price.
Blackened Chicken with Penne Pasta |
I forgot to mention that we ordered an appetizer - fried zucchini. It was your basic fried zucchini, cut into spears and fried. It came with your choice of ranch or marinara, but I didn't read that, so the default was marinara.
I will probably do without the zucchini next time. It was $5.99 and not the best fried zucchini I have ever had. More importantly, I couldn't finish my food and had to take half of it home with me.
The atmosphere is somewhat casual. I saw people with dressy clothes and people with jeans, so it's just a "come as you are" sort of place.

If you are a filmmaker in Huntsville (or really anywhere—they have had submissions from all over the country), then this film festival is a great opportunity for you to showcase your movie or short film! Slutwalk Houston--July 9th 11:00am -2:00pm
Slutwalk Houston
July 9th 11:00am -2:00pm
Cherryhurst Park
Houston, TX
I wanted to write much more and sooner about this event, but personal family matters have kept me away from the computer most of this week.
What is a “Slutwalk”? It is a worldwide response to a comment from a Toronto police officer who said, "Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized."
Walks like the one being held in Houston tomorrow have been organized all over the nation and around the world—they are an effort to make people aware of the problem and effects of blaming the victim for being raped and/or sexually assaulted. Many articles and debates have sprung up as a result to these events as well as an argument over the name “slutwalk” and whether or not the name is more helpful or harmful to the cause. There has also been a great controversy over having one of these walks in India. There has even been a controvery over this Houston event after the official Facebook event page was temporarily removed by Facebook after it was reported too many times as being "offensive."
We will be attending this event tomorrow, and will be writing a more indepth follow-up anaylsis with pictures included.
Click HERE to see the official website and HERE to see an event page for those making travel arrangements to this event from the Huntsville and Conroe area. There is also a Slutwalk Houston Facebook Page.
Edit: We drove down, ran a little late, and didn't see that many cars at the park so we left. Therefore, we can't do much of a follow-up entry. =/

RECAP: Houston's Funniest Person 2011 Contest at the Laff Spot!
Last night was the Houston’s Funniest Person 2011 Contest at the Laff Spot. I went, I laughed, and so it was INDEED worth the gas money.
The host was 2010’s winner, Nathan Hosey. When I asked him if I could take a picture of him at the end of the night he thought I was just a creeper wanting it for my personal collection, but in reality I am just a creeper who wanted a picture because I knew I was going to write about him on the Internet.
He was funny so I am glad he had a longer set at the end of the night, and I wish him better luck with his career than what he has allegedly experienced since his win from last year. I especially loved his Presidential Slogans for each of the contestants. I’m not clever enough to come up with one for him, but if he ever ran for President he would admittedly have the votes of anyone Republican that is fifty-five years or older with that In the Heat of the Night reference.
The Winners:
Stacy Anderson gets MAD PROPS (yes, I just typed “mad props”) for being the only female and the first person on stage. I agreed with her assessment of the difficulties of getting unwanted dating advice from women in relationships, and I now realize that I should be going on more dates because of the recession! Too bad I haven’t been on a date since the stock market crash of 1929. I could have been saving a LOT of money!
I LOVED the deep voice at the beginning of Adam Bob’s set! What was his slogan for the night again? I am sorry, but I can’t remember that shit, man.
Click HERE to see a few more crappy pictures of this event on our Hey, Huntsville Facebook page!
First of all, I have great respect for everyone who participated in this contest. Being a comedian is TOUGH BUSINESS. The closest thing to a standup routine that I’ve ever personally done was fall off the stage at a Tommy Wiseau Q&A, and what each of the contests did last night was MUCH harder than the River Oaks Theater floor. Especially considering that this contest is open to ANY Houstonian—even though it’s now technically held in Spring—and not just experienced comedians. I suspect that most, if not all, of the contestants last night have had previous experience on stage, but none of them were professionals , or at least have hit the “big times” in the comedic world. I laughed AT LEAST half of the time of each person’s set, and I can’t say that’s the case for a LOT of the comedians I’ve seen on Comedy Central (Carlos Mencia).
Anyway, I took some pictures last night. I used to be able to blame the poor quality of the pictures I take on having a shitty camera, but after investing in a $250 camera, I am going to have to accept that the problem is probably with me. =)The host was 2010’s winner, Nathan Hosey. When I asked him if I could take a picture of him at the end of the night he thought I was just a creeper wanting it for my personal collection, but in reality I am just a creeper who wanted a picture because I knew I was going to write about him on the Internet.

I am glad that I wasn’t a judge, because I wanted everyone to win. My voting style would have been similar to Paula Abdul’s— like her, I was also a little tipsy last night.
1998’s Funniest Person, John Wessling, announced the winners. He has found some success on Comedy Central and Last Comic Standing. I hope he isn’t really retiring, but if so then he will be a FANTASTIC Telemundo host (but never a great step-father).The Winners:
1. Theodore M.E. Taylor
He was VERY funny despite the shame he made me feel after realizing that I’ve been programmed (along with EVERY other Texan) to clap on queue during the song “Deep in the Heart of Texas”. I will also be stealing his NASA anecdote the next time someone from another state asks me if I ride horses to work/school. 2. Mickey Housely
ALSO very funny! I can’t remember most of his jokes, because I was laughing so hard. My favorite part was when he turned the MIC stand into a spear. Don’t ask me WHY—you just should have been there! Also, he looks much better than the only picture of him that I was able to take. Here is a cropped blurry close-up: 3. Gerald Torregosa
Despite knowing that I’m sounding repetitive, he was… you guessed it… VERY FUNNY! As he pointed out, I, like apparently many people, have trouble pinpointing his ethnicity, but after last night I think I have figured it out. My math skills are slightly bad because I am both NOT Asian and a female, but after last night I now know that Gerald is 24% Vietnamese, 47% Chinese, 53% Samoan, and 176% Japanimation. He also taught me the importance of spell check with the rape vs. rap in the parking lot confusion that had me (unfortunately?) mentally picturing both happening at the same time. I hope he, along with every other contestant who didn’t win first place, enters again next year!
Owen Dunn knows how to treat a girl right despite being broke, and Mark Hurtado knows that he is good choice for being humanity’s last hope… and he doesn’t mind a little rape to prove it.
Adam Castillo should continue to pursue his career as a sketch artist because I thought his drawings were spot on! Ku Egenti understands that he has a very boring name. Ken Boyd and Albert DeLeon were also… FUNNY!
I’m glad I made the trip to the Laff Spot last night. I wish we could get some stand-up in Huntsville *HINT HINT*. If anyone IS interested in performing in Huntsville, then email us at info@heyhuntsvilletx.com. We have the hook-up on where to perform! Huntsville may not be as classy as the Laff Spot, but at least the drinks are cheaper! JUST SAYIN’. =)Click HERE to see a few more crappy pictures of this event on our Hey, Huntsville Facebook page!

Aftermath: TX Crawfish Festival (Spring, TX)
We traveled down to Old Town Spring for the 25th Annual Texas Crawfish & Music Festival this past Sunday. The festival will be going on next weekend (Fri-Sun) as well, so if you missed this weekend, you can still catch it.
Upon arrival, we walked up and down the streets checking out local businesses, lots and lots of food and beverage vendors, and massive amounts of discarded crawdaddy shells. It took a while to figure out that this wasn't part of the actual festival, which was hidden in the back, through a field, and across a small bridge into an area enclosed with a chain-link fence. The festival entrance sign was a little misleading.
The actual festival had plenty of carnival rides and games, more food and drink vendors, and three stages with different types of music. There is karaoke on certain days. Be sure to check the music schedule on the official website if you are interested in seeing someone specific:
http://www.texascrawfishfestival.com/music-lineup.html
When we arrived at the country music stage, Phil Pritchet was performing. He sang a song about people getting punched in the mouth. I think it did a good job of getting the crowd pumped up, because a few minutes later, this happened:
I don't know who would do such a thing to that poor man. ;)
I didn't care about the crawfish, the other performers, or the $5.00 lemonade. I was there to see Ray Wylie Hubbard! He did my favorite song second ("Snake Farm"), but I did stick around for the rest of the show. I'm a pasty person, so I ended up with a sunburn, but it was worth it. The show was awesome, except this annoying drunk lady that kept heckling Ray Wylie. Most of the audience agreed that she should have been the one who was punched in the mouth.
Overall, the Crawfish Festival was a good time. If you go next weekend, be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a lot of money. You may want to put your kid in a bubble for $7.00 for 5 minutes.

GTFO of Huntsville for Comicpalooza! May 27 - May 29th!
Comicpalooza!
May 27-May 29
George R. Brown Convention Center, 3rd Floor
1001 Avenida de las Americas
Houston, TX 77010
Houston, TX 77010
If you already have plans for the weekend of May 27th -29th, then cancel them—unless you were already planning to attend Comicpalooza!
According to their website, Comicpalooza's purpose “is to provide the best and biggest annual multi-format pop culture convention in the southwest region of the United States, serving not only the fans of comics, science fiction, fantasy, video and table top gaming, anime, music and film, but also as a trade show and showcase for the studios, publishers, and manufacturers in those industries.”
Founded in 2008 as a small event at The Alamo Drafthouse, Comicpalooza has quickly grown into an incredibly huge annual event! Comicpalooza 2011 will not only feature Battlestar Galactica Admiral, EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (my favorite role of his is still Gaff in Bladerunner)—but it will also include other celebrity guests such as the following: Marina Sirtis (Deana Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation and voice actor for Demona from Gargoyles), Tony Todd (CANDY MAN ), Sean Maher (Simon from the painfully too short Joss Whedon series, Firefly), Peter Mahew (Chewbacca), and several more! Click HERE to get the complete list.
Also in attendance, will be one of my all-time favorite comic book writers (quickly becoming my number one favorite the more I read Strangers in Paradise), Terry Moore. He is probably best known for his long running series Strangers in Paradise—which features a love triangle between Francine, Katchoo, and David that is made further complicated as more characters are introduced to the mix, plotlines involving the mob, and other thrilling storylines. Part soap opera, part kick-butt action, and ALWAYS absorbing… Strangers in Paradise is a must read for anyone with good taste! His most recent series, Echo, just finished and he is already working on his next project. I know I will be asking him more about THAT at Comicpalooza! Terry Moore will only be there on Saturday. Click HERE for info about other comic book writers and artists that will be in attendance.
Coincidentally, Comicpalooza has several ties to Huntsville. Andrew Williams, the man behind their video reviews, is also a SHSU graduate. SHSU’s Quidditch team will also be there!
Comicpalooza also features a film festival that is sponsored by Spatterfest. If you can’t tell by the name “Splatterfest,” this film festival will feature several horror films playing back to back throughout each day with the last one beginning at midnight on Friday and Saturday night. So, in between stalking Admiral Adama, and buying lots and lots of comic books, go check out a few horror films.
Huntsville’s own Gothic Films/Ethician Arts (a division of EVN, Inc owned by George Russell) will have their movie, Naked Horror, playing in the festival on Saturday night at midnight! Hopefully, they will have a booth set up all weekend. If they do, then you should stop and say hello to Naked Horror director Carlo Rodriguez, cinematographer Jason Henderson, and cameraman/editor/cat lover Luis Torres!
Expect more updates from us about this event, and I hope to see you there! We will be taking lots of pictures!
